« see all Press Release: Oct 29, 2003 Three Aspiring Designers Receive $10,000 Award; $25,000 Grand Prize Winner RevealedBATTLE CREEK, Mich. -For the first time since they popped onto breakfast tables nearly 40 years ago, Kellogg’s Pop-Tarts issued a nationwide search to find aspiring kid designers in the “Design Your Own Pop-Tarts” contest. Three young designers were awarded $10,000 each for inventing their ideal version of Pop-Tarts toaster pastries. A grand prize of $25,000 was also awarded to an Arizona mother who found a winning illustration of the top three designs in a Pop-Tarts package. More than 50,000 entries were received in the contest. To enter, children aged 5 to 17 went online at “We were overwhelmed with the number of unique entries we received in response to our challenge to kids to serve as a Pop-Tarts designer,” said Jenny Enochson, director of marketing communications for Kellogg. “We are thrilled to continue to appeal to the innovation of today’s youth and recognize their creativity through this unique contest.” The winning designers are:
Lillian Irizarry, a mother of three from Anthem, Arizona, won the grand prize when she found illustrations of the winning designs in a Pop-Tarts Frosted Blueberry box at Fry’s Marketplace in Phoenix. “When my daughter opened the box of Pop-Tarts and we found out we won the grand prize, we couldn't believe it,” stated Irizarry. “Now I have two reasons to thank Kellogg – for making one of my family’s favorite foods and for such a fantastic prize!” With 2002 sales of $8.3 billion, Kellogg Company (NYSE:K) is the world’s leading producer of cereal and a leading manufacturer of convenience foods such as cereal bars, frozen waffles, toaster pastries, cookies and crackers.
